Wild Walks

The Wild Walk Gallery Feature posts comprise photographs l have taken during my many walks around the medieval town of Sandwich and surrounding areas of the county of Kent, where l live and added inspirational quotes, music and fun facts and snippets of interest too.

The photographs taken for Wild Walks are a mixture of buildings and architecture, flora, fauna, The River Stour and other waterways, Gazen Salts Nature Reserve and Town Life.

I live in the beautiful and historic town of Sandwich in Kent in the southeast of England. The River Stour lies on the edge of the town. Originally, Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports, and we have many medieval buildings here from the original construction time. Sandwich is two miles from the coast, and although once it was a major port in its own right, this is no longer the case due to the silting up of the River Stour.

St Clement’s Church

You can easily walk to this beautiful church from the town centre or the southeast side of the Ramparts. St Clements is an Anglican Parish Church and has been so since 1948 following the union of three parishes of St Clement’s, St Mary’s and St Peter’s churches.

The graveyard is filled with many ornate headstones and flourishes with gorgeous blossoms throughout the year, from bluebells to daffodils, primroses, and crabapple trees.

USN – P22 Gunboat

The Sandwich P22 was used in the 2017 Film Dunkirk starring Tom Hardy and Harry Styles. The boat was one of a fleet of 17 used during the Marshall Plan. Each gunboat had a crew of six US Navy personnel on board.

A German shipbuilder built the United States Navy gunboat P22 – Hizzler Ship Yard – shortly after WWII in 1952 for the USA. The American military could then patrol the Rhine river during the Cold War and keep the USSR [Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] to their agreed borders.

The gunboats were awarded to the West German Army in 1958. For ten years afterwards, the German army continued with the role of navigation surveyors and escorts to cargo ships using the vessels. By the end of the sixties and when the Rhine was once more fully functional and open to navigation. The gunboats now surplus to requirements were sold off.

The gunboat arrived in Sandwich Quay in 2017, having moved from Ramsgate Harbour. In 2019, she participated in the 75th D-Day commemoration events. An enthusiastic group of volunteers now work with the Trustees to ensure that this vital vessel survives.

      1. Oh yeah… it’s been a roller-coaster at the Casa today. Started before dawn with Ben’s tablet deciding it was time to die🤦🏼‍♀️ Ben NEEDS his tablet. Lots of other little dramas followed.

I think there have been more positives than negatives today, but it’s not noon yet and too close to call🤪

      2. Haha oh yes Tablet Rocks!

Suze’s grandson Eeuben is the same, all hell breaks loose if there is a problem. I do get it, l am not as bad as Ben or Reuben and l am way better these days as l am outside more, but there was a time when if there was an issue with my desktop, it might have seemed like the end of the world.

Tablets, iPads, desktops, laptops they are our worlds – without them we are lost and can no loner be us … sad tidings and woe betide everyone else …
