Basil |

Basil is great for warding off flies and mosquitoes, and the oil in Basil kills mosquito eggs. Many herbs with potent oils and scents seemingly have repellant abilities. Basil falls into this category of pest control as it is exceptionally good at deterring small flies and gnats due to its pungency. We all know that Basil is great for pesto as well! Basil has been used for centuries, from the Egyptians to the Greeks to the Romans. Everyone loved Basil! But mosquitoes find Basil revolting!! Eat more Basil, have Basil in your pores, and rub the leaves on your skin. It can also soothe fresh bites and ease the itching. Companion planting it next to tomato plants also aids in keeping the bugs away. |

I love fresh basil. In Seattle, we had a click and grow from Amazon. We planted cherry tomatoes, basil and dill in it. It gave us great crop.

Hey Sadje, Dill is a great crop and both herbs are great as companions to the Tommies 🙂

Well there is that, although both can be eaten as side garnish. I meant as growing companions 🙂

Thanks, Rory. I had forgotten Basil deters pests. I do love the flavor of it! Have you noticed the subtle differences between regular Basil and Thai Basil? I find I prefer the Thai.

I have indeed noticed the subtle changes in flavour and scent. I like many forms of basil, but l do like the spicy’ness of the Thai, it reminds me a little at times like thta of Rocket.

Ok I will plant 🌿 basil and marigolds in my yard ❤️👏👏👏

Excellent Trisha, try growing the basil indoors till it is a sapling as in about 4″ tall, then plant outside. That encourages it to grow and get its height first. Marigolds can be planted direct to the soil as seeds 🙂

Noted 😊 thank you very much!! 🙌
Hopefully indoors I could keep alive ?? Maybe they sell them that way? So I can just plant ?

Hey Trisha, very much so, l think it would be way easier for you to visit a nursery or a garden centre and pick up a couple of the ready to go plants as small plants in pots. Common basil will grow very well in the garden whilst more specialist varieties like Thai basil [great for cooking] might be best grown indoors till they are larger plants and then transferred to the garden.
