Welcome to Theme Life

Walking around Sandwich and the surrounding countryside as l do daily, weekly and monthly, I take several thousand photographs. More authentic reflections of quantity might be closer to 3500 assorted photos digitally taken monthly once all the poorer quality ‘click images’ are extracted.

Of this figure, ten to fifteen per cent, are held back in folders and will be used in the blog’s gallery features, prompts, or published articles.

My main focus is wildlife, so flora and fauna mostly, but also l have a hankering sometimes for unusual shots, or things of a quirky nature. 

It appeals to my sense of humour, and sometimes these ‘strange’ shots are edited and kept for a ‘rainy day’ gallery or a prompt in the future or because l just like them, and they might make for an interesting themed gallery, pretty much like this series. 

Not all the galleries here will be specifically themed all the time. They might focus on specific events or moments that were happen chanced upon or simply hold a fascination for me.

The Beauty of Bug’s Life
I have always been fascinated by bugs, and a newfound passion is microphotography. Not that l can always get the time to participate in this activity of late, but if l can, l take the occasional photograph or two.

These photos are from the spring and summer of 2022.

Not everyone is keen on bugs, yet they are a critical part of the whole process of environmental life. They are important. Yet most see them as pests. So many go out of their way to chase and hunt them down in the bid to wipe out and exterminate them.

Yet there are many benefits:

They assist with pollination with plants; without plants, we wouldn’t be here. They are part of the whole earthen organic process known as decomposition and recycling. They are a valuable food source for other insects and animals. Bugs also serve as predators to other real ‘oh no!’ annoying bugs who are pests!

I have started making various styled refugia and bug hotels in the allotment so that l can attract many species and a wider diversity of bugs, especially in the gardens there. At least that way, l should be able to start with my microphotography again.

The image above Peacock Butterfly Wings – Free photo on Pixabay isn’t mine. The irony l found was that whilst we saw huge clusters of these larvae during the spring season we saw very few Peacocks in the reserve.

    1. Hey Suzanne, l know, we were all a little bit curious about that as well. There were many clusters around on the outside in nettle bushes and yet so few actual butterflies inside the reserve itself.

      Obviously they didn’t like something in the environment.
