Worms Casing The Lawn! When you see worms on your grass at night [mainly after a rain], this is a sign of very healthy soil. After adding moisture or the rains, the absence of worms might mean sterile soil or severely depleted nutrient soil. From time to time, you may see little mounds of broken soils like miniature molehills on your grassy lawn, and these would usually appear after heavy rainfall. These are called worm castings. They are a rich nutrient source of soil or dirt or even tiny composts if you wish. They are also tremendous for the lawn itself. I know some gardeners and ornamental lawn growers who detest the worms for this behaviour as much as the castings themselves as it makes the property look less than perfect and not so ‘flat’. It can ruin their day, especially if their grounds experience a lot of activity! There is a splash of irony here in many ways, and this is that moles are attracted to lawns and fields with healthy soil and high levels of the earthworm and abundant bug activity! Earthworms and their casings are grand for composting, and the worms are superb at aeration of the soils beneath the lawns. Good job l am a composter and not a proud lawner! What l tend to do with them is not walk on them and flatten them, but rake them further into the lawn, and more so when l am raking leaves, the casings add valuable nutrients and act as an organic fertiliser to your grass. When l am raking, l will also have this nutrient present on the leaves heading for the compost! Win-win! The hack is ‘don’t despair’ the presence of the castings upon your lawns, and the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. |
