Theme Life

Welcome to Theme Life

Walking around Sandwich and the surrounding countryside as l do daily, weekly and monthly, I take many photographs. Ten to fifteen per cent are held back in folders and will be used in the blog’s gallery features, prompts, or published articles, whilst some are specifically kept back for this series only.

My main photography focus is wildlife, flora and fauna but also architecture and quirky captures.

Only some of the galleries here will be specifically themed all the time. They might focus on specific events or moments that were chanced upon or hold a fascination for me.

I hope you enjoy the series

Sandwich Architectural Buildings
Sandwich is a town and civil parish in the Dover District of Kent, south-east England. It lies on the River Stour and has a population of 4,985.

Sandwich was one of the Cinque Ports and still has many original medieval buildings, including several listed public houses and gates in the old town walls,
churches, almshouses and the White Mill. While once a major port, it is now two miles from the sea due to the disappearance of the Wantsum Channel.

Its historic centre has been preserved. Sandwich Bay is home to nature reserves and two world-class golf courses, Royal St George’s and Prince’s.

The town is also home to many educational and cultural events. Sandwich also gave its name to the food by way of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, and the word sandwich is now found in several languages.

  1. Wow!! That’s like right out of a storybook – omg your town is sooooo adorable 🥰 ❤️👏

It’s sooo English!! The history is amazing

On one of your pictures it had a street sign that says “Give Way” what does that mean?

Your town is awesome 👏👏👏 totally different than my area – is really storybook like! No wonder all touristy in good weather! ❤️👏

What a little gem you find! 💎

There is a little town in Massachusetts called Sandwich

I laugh at the police cars cause they say “sandwich police” lol 😄😄 would make me laugh every time!

    1. The Give Way sign is a traffic sign for drivers and alerts them to the way ahead gives the first right of way to other drivers.

I remember reading about the Sandwich, Massachusetts a few months ago – it’s funny, l found the word Massachusetts the funny part and many others see Sandwich as the funny part here 🙂

We have some strange names in England for places, like Twenty, and Tongue End and Little Dyke, Cocks and even Shitterton 🙂

      1. Ohhhhh ok – lol …
        I see … over here it’s “yield”

And you drive on which side of the car? Lol – that would mess me up a lot!! I would be disoriented if you drive on wrong side of road and have signs I don’t know 😮

Well Massachusetts is most like England – all their town name words are similar to yours

        Gloucester, Worcester, Leicester, Leominster etc

Hahaha yeah our states each have funny names

California has Paradise, Cool, Weed, Rough and Ready (yes that is a town name)

    1. Hi Eugenia – which links?

There are only a few in the post itself – Theme Life Directory is working, Wikipedia for Sandwich is working and Earthly Comforts design link are the three, which ones are you experiencing issues with?

      Do you mean photos?

      1. Yes, I meant the photos, Rory. The two at the bottom of your post were missing. I have the problem frequently because I’m always cleaning up my media and accidently delete images that are in use.

  2. You live in a very beautiful and historic city Rory. I read of this place initially in a Georgette Heyer’s novel, and I think there was an earl of Sandwich in it too.

      1. You did well to find that out before the days of internet 🙂 I hadn’t even heard of Sandwich the town until l started supplying wild animals to their conservation project here [mow shut down] back in 2008, let alone an Earl 🙂
