Composting

Weed Off!

There is a somewhat old-fashioned thought that weeds cannot be composted.

I have been composting weeds for a few years now, with no problems; however, l have run both hot and cold composting methods. For weeds to be effectively killed off, two things will help.

1

Cut off the root and dump that separately as in disposing of or place into a soaking bin where more awkward plant items can go, such as palm fronds or roots.

A soaking bin is a container filled with water used for liquid composting and covered with a lid. The contents are left soaking for anything upwards of between four to eight weeks and being stirred once a fortnight, in which time they will have broken down sufficiently for you to add them to your compost. An alternative to this is to turn them into ‘weed tea’.

You could try shredding the root or jumping up and down on it or hammering it out and then adding it to your heap broken and seriously damaged.

I still advise taking root off anyway and either throwing away or breaking it down before adding to the compost heap.

Using heat – if you run a hot compost pile, you will destroy 97% of the weeds, if not 100%, with just the heat alone.

If, however, you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to creating and sustaining a hot compost pile, then my advice is to take them down to the tip or turn them into a Weed Tea as mentioned above.
