Gardening vs. Landscaping: Key Differences Explained

Someone asked me recently if there’s much of a difference between gardening and landscaping services. The short answer is yes, but there’s some overlap, too. Landscapers can do gardening, and gardeners (like me) can sometimes take on landscaping elements.

I mainly offer gardening services, so I focus on regular garden maintenance—weeding, pruning, planting, lawn care, and general upkeep.

I also do seasonal spruce-ups and garden clearances. For some clients, I help with softscaping ideas or themed planting designs.

To break it down:

Gardening
What it’s about: Keeping your existing garden healthy and tidy.
Typical jobs: Weeding, pruning, planting flowers or veg, mowing lawns, mulching, and dealing with pests or diseases.
Style of work: Regular visits—weekly, monthly, or seasonally.
Skills involved: Knowing plants, soil care, and seasonal planning.

Landscaping
What it’s about: Designing and building outdoor spaces.
Typical jobs: Laying patios, putting up fences, reshaping land, installing irrigation, turfing, and complete garden redesigns.
Style of work: Bigger, project-based jobs—usually one-off or occasional.
Skills involved: Construction, design, drainage, surveying, and often using machinery.

Where they overlap:
Both can involve planting schemes. Some landscapers offer maintenance, too, and many gardeners, like Earthly Comforts, are happy to take on small landscaping jobs, like reworking a border, laying a small natural patio, or creating a wildlife or cottage garden path.
