You will have read here before lines from me about a spoonful of soil, so I decided to go into a little more depth…
In just one teaspoon of healthy soil, there’s an entire hidden world bustling with microscopic life—like a miniature jungle beneath our feet. You can expect to find: Bacteria – These are the most abundant, numbering in the billions. They help break down organic matter, fix nitrogen, and support plant health. Fungi – Including thread-like structures called hyphae, fungi decompose tougher materials like wood and also form symbiotic relationships with plant roots (mycorrhizae). Protozoa – Tiny, single-celled organisms that feed on bacteria and help cycle nutrients. Nematodes – Microscopic worms that can be beneficial or harmful; some help control pests, others feed on plant roots. Actinomycetes – A type of bacteria that looks a bit like fungi and gives soil that “earthy” smell; they’re key in breaking down complex organic compounds. Altogether, these organisms form a complex, interdependent ecosystem. They recycle nutrients, build soil structure, support plant growth, and even help filter water. It’s astonishing how much life—and how much essential activity—can be packed into just one tiny spoonful of dirt.
“A Spoonful of Soil” (to the tune of “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins) In every patch beneath the sun, There’s hidden life and quiet fun, You dig a bit and snap! The earth’s alive! And every trowel of earth you take Reveals a world that’s wide awake— A maze! A thrill! It’s very clear to see that… A spoonful of soil brings the garden to life, The Garden to Life, The garden to life! Just a spoonful of soil brings the garden to life In a most delightful way! A beetle burrowing its nest Has very little time to rest, While carving out its cosy earthen crib. Though busy with its wormy chores, It wriggles through the forest floor, It knows the soil will help the roots explore—for… A spoonful of soil brings the garden to life, The Garden to Life, The garden to life! Just a spoonful of soil brings the garden to life In a most delightful way! The honey bee that sips the nectar Sees the flowers start to bloom, Thanks to the soil and all the creatures that live beneath it. They chomp and mix and spin and till— Each one a cog, a root, a will— And hence, (and hence), They find (they find), Their world is well-designed! Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h ah! A spoonful of soil brings the garden to life, The Garden to Life, The garden to life! Just a spoonful of soil brings the garden to life In a most delightful way!
