Gardeners call compost “black gold” for good reason. It may not glitter, but nothing is more valuable for healthy, sustainable gardens. At the Soil Builder’s Hub Club, compost isn’t an afterthought — it’s the heartbeat of the whole operation. Every clump of lawn cuttings, hedge trimming, and bag of weeds has a second life waiting, and it all begins in our composting bays. Here’s how we give this process the attention it deserves:
Not Just Another Heap of Waste We avoid open heaps. Our 12 bins are closed boxes, sit on grassed soil and are made from unwanted and untreated pallets with weed membrane and lids—like giant hot ovens for compost. This keeps heat in and moisture balanced, so bins don’t dry out or get waterlogged. Compost progresses smoothly year-round. With a 13th bin for turning, bins rotate through filling, cooking, and finishing, ensuring a steady supply of compost throughout the year.
The Secret Ingredients: Shredding, Bokashi, and Coffee It’s not just about the bins. We use several smart tweaks to speed up and enrich our process: Shredded Waste – Smaller pieces mean a larger surface area for microbes, so the bins heat up faster and break down more quickly. Bokashi – A fermented starter made from bran and friendly microbes (tiny organisms like bacteria and fungi). We add it to the centre of each bin in turn, supercharging decomposition by giving the compost helpful microorganisms right away. Coffee Grounds – Rich in nitrogen and worm-friendly, these grounds balance and boost the compost mix. These tweaks reduce a year-plus process to something much faster.
Faster Than You Think Traditional composting (the process of breaking down organic waste into nutrient-rich soil) often takes 12–18 months before you can use it. At the Soil Builder’s Hub, with our closed-bin system (sealed compost containers), shredding, and bokashi and coffee boost, we can complete the cycle (from waste to ready compost) in just 6–9 months. Each bin holds about 1 tonne of green waste. With 12 bins active, that’s 12 tonnes in rotation at once. Running 2–3 cycles per year means we’re producing 25–30 tonnes of finished compost annually. That’s around 2 tonnes of compost monthly—enough to impact our clients’ gardens.
Why It Matters for Our Clients For Earthly Comforts clients, this is more than waste management. It’s about returns: Healthier, more fertile beds where plants thrive. A smaller footprint—waste is recycled right here in Sandwich. And perhaps best of all, the satisfaction of knowing that their own garden waste is returning to their soil, improved and ready to give back.
Compost at the Soil Builder’s Hub isn’t waste management — it’s soil building. With some design, patience, and the right ingredients, yesterday’s clippings become tomorrow’s black gold.
