| I was asked the other day how long I’m taking off for Christmas, and whether I enjoy taking time out. The simple answer is: yes… and yes — ish. Last year, I took too long off. I planned to be away from work from Tuesday, 24th December to Friday, 3rd January (2024–25), for 10 days. In reality, it turned out to be too much. I ended up working for seven of those days, spent two days down on Plot 17, and didn’t really take any proper time to relax. This year will be similar — but more realistic. I’m officially off from the 25th to the 28th of December, back to work from the 29th to the 31st, and then taking New Year’s Day off. Of those four days off: Christmas Day will be spent with Suze’s family, Boxing Day will likely be a quiet, lazy day together, and the weekend will probably be spent at Plot 17. So realistically, five days feels more than enough as “time out”. Do I enjoy taking time off, or do I regret it? I enjoy it when the time isn’t wasted. Last year, if I’d thought it through properly, I’d have realised the break was too long and planned something shorter. I enjoy working, and I don’t like stepping away without purpose. I’m also not especially attached to the festive period — to me, they’re just days like any other — so when I’m not working, I sometimes regret it. It’s a tough one. |
Why Short Breaks Suit Me Better
When I worked I enjoyed my time off, however, if I was away for more than a few days, I found it difficult to get back into the groove.

Yes it can be awkward to get back into the swing of things after some time off … another reason shorter works for me.
