Lavender will repel a host of nasty critters such as mosquitoes, house flies and moths and slugs who don’t have this powerfully smelling herb on their diet sheet . But is also absolutely fantastic for attracting the pollinators in like bees and butterflies and hoverflies too.

So to be rid of bugs, you can use lavender and whilst you can find success with both fresh and dried flowers, you might find oil extract a more natural repellent! Planting it as a companion to leeks and carrots will confuse many pests due to the high levels of pungency. The strong scent alone can deter aphids. Cabbage and broccoli will appreciate having lavender near to their growing space.

Lavender is also great for making the bed linen smell incredible!

  5. I like lavender – and butterflies 🦋

    But then you say bees and I also have hornets … so probably no on lavender

    I do like the smell of just lavender – fresh lavender in a field ❤️

    I do not like lavender and vanilla together as smells – Actually I don’t like any of the perfume smells for women with lavender

    Only fresh lavender

    But just no on things that can hurt – I’m good! I do not want to be trapped inside at all!!

    It’s the bees and hornets I do not want meh 🫤

      1. I do not think I can handle plants bees love – they literally make beeline for me

        If I were to have plants with bees would be jasmine because I love jasmine smell so much – but I am not willing due to bees 🐝

        They would totally trap me inside! The color of my clothes or way I smell – I dunno? But they come after me always!!

  6. Hey, Rory! I love lavender, too. It is useful for so many things, including helping one to relax and go to sleep at night.

    I always keep a bottle of lavender essential oil in our bathroom. A drop or two in the trash can and/or toilet bowl is a wonderful air freshener. I enjoy lavender as a mist on my body after bathing and before bedtime. I just add several drops of the essential oil to a spray bottle of warm water and shake well. I also use it to apply a light mist to mattress and pillows when changing the bedding. Of course, I give it a little time to dry before covering the bottom sheet and pillows with the other linens. I add the essential oil to my washer’s soap dispenser when I wash my towels and sheets, too.

    I didn’t know of its use as an insect repellant. Or if I ever did I forgot. 😊I have never been successful at growing lavender, for some reason. Of course, here on this wooded property it’s due to so little sunlight.

      Lavender has some wonderful properties to it and you are quite right regarding some of your uses mentioned here too. My mother used to use it all the time.

      Next year l will be introducing anew series called Tales from the Apothecary which will bring all these snippets to light as well 🙂
