| A question I am occasionally asked is, ‘Can I/should I/am I ‘able’ to add soil to my compost heap, pile, or bin? ‘ Indeed, I regularly enrich my heaps with soil, a practice that introduces a wealth of microbes and nutrient organisms. These organisms play a crucial role in the composting process, breaking down organic matter and turning it into nutrient-rich compost. From spring to autumn of each year, in the garden or the allotment, I have flower pots or seed trays with old soils and roots with soils still attached. Also, there are times when I am given bags of unwanted compost mixes, and I add everything to an existing pile and turn it in. Compost piles are great for cleaning old soils and giving them a much-needed booster. All my heaps are on soil, and soil acts as a great accelerator to kick-start slow-to-start compost heaps. It’s a practical approach. I don’t go out of my way to dig up ground soil and add it in, but if old soils or composts are kicking around, then yes, I will throw these in. |
