An Extraordinary Gardenverse Christmas Mystery Some gardens refuse to behave…
In the winter of 1626, five mysterious figures disappeared into the thick fog surrounding the ancient settlement of Stonar, on the Kentish coast. They were never seen again. No satisfactory explanation was ever recorded, and as the centuries passed, the circumstances surrounding their disappearance faded into obscurity. Whatever happened that winter became another forgotten mystery, buried beneath four hundred years of history. But some mysteries have a peculiar habit of refusing to remain buried. Four hundred years later, something is stirring again. In the seemingly ordinary Kentish village of Elderwick, Christmas 2026 is approaching, and the gardeners at Elderwick Garden Company are looking forward to finishing their remaining jobs, putting away their tools, and enjoying a well-earned festive break. Unfortunately, the gardens of Elderwick appear to have other ideas. Something rather extraordinary is happening inside a local greenhouse. Plants are flowering when they shouldn’t. Strange noises can be heard after dark. Objects have developed an alarming tendency to move without assistance, and the greenhouse itself appears to be expanding in ways that would give any respectable building surveyor a nervous breakdown. Naturally, somebody has to investigate. And who better than a group of professional gardeners who have absolutely no idea what they’re about to encounter? What begins as an apparently straightforward gardening enquiry soon becomes a peculiar adventure involving impossible botanical phenomena, mysterious mechanical contraptions, extraordinary little people, and a secretive organisation known as the Ministry of Misbehaving Gardens. An organisation that has spent centuries dealing with horticultural problems that most gardeners would prefer never to discover. Because beneath the familiar gardens, hedgerows, ancient buildings and quiet countryside of Kent lies another world. A world of forgotten knowledge, extraordinary creatures, peculiar inventions, ancient traditions and gardens that occasionally develop minds of their own. And while the Ministry might consider such matters perfectly routine, the gardeners of Elderwick are about to discover that their ordinary working lives are becoming decidedly extraordinary. There will be mysteries to investigate, creatures to encounter, mechanical disasters to prevent and more than a few occasions when somebody really should have listened to the gardener who suggested leaving well enough alone. After all, curiosity is a wonderful thing. Until something curious decides to investigate you in return.

Welcome to the Gardenverse This Christmas, The Gardener’s Curious Journal will introduce an entirely new fictional universe: The Gardenverse, beginning with The Ministry of Misbehaving Gardens and its first two-part adventure, The Curious Case of the Christmas Greenhouse. Blending Gothic botanical fantasy, British folklore, Victorian-inspired steampunk, eccentric characters, curious creatures, mysterious adventures and a generous helping of distinctly British humour, the Gardenverse will explore a world where the extraordinary exists just beyond the boundaries of the everyday. These stories are for curious readers of all ages, combining the familiar pleasures of gardening and the British countryside with the wonderfully improbable possibilities of fantasy. And although our first adventure takes place at Christmas, the Gardenverse is intended to become something much larger: an ongoing collection of mysteries, adventures and extraordinary encounters. The greenhouse is merely the beginning. Coming This Christmas The Curious Case of the Christmas Greenhouse Part One: Friday 25 December 2026 — 20:30 Part Two: Saturday 26 December 2026 — 20:30 Published exclusively in The Gardener’s Curious Journal. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce readers to the peculiar world of Elderwick, its gardening company, the mysterious Ministry, and some of the extraordinary characters who inhabit the Gardenverse. There will be clues, curiosities and perhaps the occasional warning about horticultural activities best left unexplored. For now, however, remember one thing. Some gardens refuse to behave. And this Christmas, we’ll find out why.
