The Summer We Never Forgot
Why Britain still measures every heatwave against 1976
Yesterday, one of my clients, who is ninety-three years old, mentioned that her daughter-in-law had described the summer of 2026 as being exactly like 1976. It was not intended as a grand statement about the environment. It was simply one of those passing comments people make when Britain settles into another prolonged spell of heat.

I found myself disagreeing.

Not because the summer of 1976 was not remarkable. It unquestionably was. It remains one of the most extraordinary combinations of heat, drought and sunshine in modern British weather history. Yet saying that a summer today is exactly like 1976 overlooks something rather important. The weather may occasionally resemble it, but the climate in which it occurs has changed.

They are not growing from the same ground.

There is a certain irony in my writing about a British summer I never experienced. In 1976, I was thirteen years old and living in Australia. My childhood took me from Australia between 1965 and 1967, to Malaysia from 1967 until 1971, and then back to Australia, until I returned to Britain in 1977. By the time I arrived, the famous heatwave had already passed into national folklore.

I have lived in Seaford, Geelong, Boronia, Springvale, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Darwin, and have spent time around Wilson’s Promontory. Australia was always a country of vastly different climates, and nobody needed persuading that Darwin and Melbourne belonged to different weather worlds. The north was hotter, the south cooler, the interior drier, and the coasts moderated by the sea, although reality was naturally more complicated than any neat description.

What I remember most strongly is that frost was not part of my ordinary childhood experience. I do not claim that Victoria never had frosts, because it certainly did, particularly inland and in colder pockets. I can only say that I do not remember seeing them where we lived. Christmas was spent on beaches, but beach visits in winter were not treated as some act of unusual endurance either. The Australia I knew was varied, but its regions seemed to have more dependable climatic identities.

Today, conversations with people living there often sound different. Australia is warmer overall, yet many people also speak about heavy rain, sudden cold mornings, frosts, flooding and abrupt changes between conditions. That is not necessarily a contradiction. A warming climate does not remove winter, cold fronts or local variation. It changes the wider setting in which those events occur and can make the old rhythms feel less reliable.

Memory is a useful place to begin an enquiry, but it is a dangerous place to finish one.

That is the principle behind this series. I have spent much of my life observing the natural world from several different positions: as a child living in contrasting climates, as someone professionally involved for many years in exotic livestock brokerage, as a wildlife environmentalist and conservation volunteer, and now as a working gardener. Conversations about changing habitats, threatened species and animals disappearing from the wild were part of my professional life long before climate and biodiversity became everyday subjects.

None of that makes my memories scientific evidence. It does mean I have spent a long time paying attention.

Since returning to Britain in 1977, I have watched the seasons repeat themselves often enough to recognise when their behaviour begins to feel different. Gardeners notice timing. We notice when grass continues to grow later than expected, when the soil dries more quickly, when roses flower well into autumn, and when plants once thought marginal begin surviving winter with very little complaint. Nature rarely announces that something has changed. It simply behaves differently until one day the gardener realises the old calendar no longer fits quite as neatly as it once did.

The conversation about 1976 interested me partly because people often speak as though it were the first truly hot British summer. It was not. Britain experienced severe heat, dryness and drought long before the twentieth century, never mind the modern discussion about climate change.

The nineteenth century produced several summers that were considered extraordinary in their own time. The years 1826, 1846, 1868, 1893 and 1899 all contained periods of notable heat or dryness. Some affected harvests and water supplies; others filled newspapers with accounts of oppressive temperatures and parched land. The people living through them did not need modern terminology to understand that the weather had become exceptional.

The early twentieth century brought more memorable examples. The summer of 1911 was intensely hot and dry, while 1921 became one of Britain’s great drought years. There were further notable spells in 1947, 1955, 1957 and 1959. Britain has never been a country where every summer arrived gently, delivered a few pleasant afternoons and then apologised for the inconvenience.

Hot summers are not new.

That fact is sometimes presented as though it settles the entire argument. Britain had hot weather before industrial climate change became pronounced; modern heat must be no different. Yet this confuses the existence of individual extremes with the climate surrounding them.

An exceptional summer in a cooler climate is not the same as an exceptional summer occurring within a warmer one.

The year 1976 still deserves its reputation. It was not remembered simply because one afternoon became extremely hot. Its power lay in persistence.

The heat continued, the rain failed, the soil dried, reservoirs shrank, and gardens turned brown. It followed earlier dry conditions, which intensified the drought. Water restrictions became part of daily life, crops suffered, and the country experienced a prolonged summer that left its mark on public memory.

It became more than weather. It became a story.

People remember standpipes, cracked earth, swarms of ladybirds and lawns reduced to straw. Those who were children remember school holidays that seemed to continue under endless sunshine. Adults remember the practical difficulties, but even those hardships have softened around the edges with time. Fifty years is long enough for inconvenience to become anecdote and discomfort to acquire a rather flattering golden light.

That is how weather enters folklore.

The summer of 1976 also remains close enough in memory for millions of people. Mention the winter of 1962–63, the heat of 1976 or the Great Storm of 1987, and someone will usually produce a story. These events become national measuring sticks because they were shared experiences, before media fragmented into thousands of different conversations and before every unusual weather event arrived accompanied by a week of argument.

For much of my adult life, however, 1976 did not seem to dominate every discussion about summer. It was certainly remembered and occasionally used as a benchmark, but references to it have become much more prominent since Britain exceeded 40°C in 2022. Since then, whenever temperatures rise for more than a few days, 1976 seems to return like a retired champion being invited back to inspect the competition.

The comparison is understandable. It is also incomplete.

Britain today is warmer on average than it was fifty years ago. Modern heatwaves begin at a higher baseline, and exceptionally warm days no longer occur against quite the same background conditions. This does not mean that every recent summer has been hotter, drier or sunnier than 1976. Some have not come close to matching its persistence. It means the likelihood and character of extreme heat are changing.

A gardener understands the importance of a baseline. A single hot afternoon may temporarily wilt a plant, but several warm weeks following a dry spring create a different problem entirely. The same temperature can have very different consequences depending on the soil’s condition, the moisture already available, the warmth of the preceding months, and whether the night offers any relief.

That last point is easily overlooked. We tend to judge heat by the highest afternoon temperature, yet warm nights matter enormously. Plants, animals, buildings and people all need an opportunity to release accumulated heat. When nights remain unusually warm, the strain continues without the ordinary period of recovery.

What I notice in gardens is not merely that Britain sometimes becomes hot. I notice the cumulative effects. Lawns that once browned briefly can remain stressed for longer. Established shrubs require watering in conditions where we once expected them to manage. Planting seasons become harder to judge because spring warmth may arrive early, only to be followed by a damaging cold spell. Heavy rain can fall on ground too dry or compacted to absorb it, giving us the peculiar modern combination of drought stress and local flooding within a relatively short period.

I have also watched the character of the seasons alter. Autumn, in particular, seems to be disappearing in some English counties—or at least the autumn I remember does. I am not suggesting the season has vanished from Britain. In some areas, it still arrives with all the colour, mist and gradual cooling we associate with it. Elsewhere, especially in parts of southern England, it can feel increasingly compressed.

Summer warmth lingers. Trees remain green late into the year, or drought causes leaves to dull and fall before they have produced their proper autumn display. Then the weather changes abruptly, and winter seems to arrive without the old, measured transition. Autumn once felt like a season in its own right. Some years now, it feels more like a brief disagreement between a summer reluctant to leave and a winter unsure when to begin.

The British climate was never perfectly orderly, of course. We have always complained about seasons arriving at the wrong time, which may be our most dependable national tradition. Yet natural variability does not prevent longer patterns from changing. Both can be true: Britain can still produce a cold week, a wet summer or an old-fashioned autumn while the broader climate continues to warm.

This is why the claim that 2026 is exactly like 1976 does not quite work for me.

There may be similarities in particular places. There may be comparable weeks of sunshine, dry soils or exhausted gardens. Some people may experience the present summer and feel genuinely transported back fifty years. Their memories are not necessarily false.

But 1976 was an extraordinary event in a cooler Britain. The heat of today is occurring within a warmer and increasingly unsettled climate, one in which prolonged heat, intense rainfall, milder winters and shifting seasonal boundaries are becoming part of the wider pattern.

Perhaps the reason we still talk about 1976 is that it was exceptional enough to earn a place in history. It stood apart so clearly that an entire country remembered it.

The question is not whether Britain had heatwaves before climate change. It did. The question is whether exceptional heat is now becoming less exceptional, and what happens to gardens, wildlife and people when the unusual begins edging towards the familiar.

My conversation with my client lasted only a few moments. Neither of us was trying to win an argument, and I doubt her daughter-in-law imagined her comment would set me thinking about two centuries of British weather. Most worthwhile observations begin that way: casually, without ceremony, while somebody is getting on with something else.

The summer of 1976 may always remain Britain’s benchmark. It probably deserves to.

But the greatest mistake we could make would be to use our memory of one extraordinary summer to avoid noticing how profoundly the climate around all our summers has changed.

The past is useful because it gives us something against which to measure the present. It becomes less useful when nostalgia turns it into a place where nothing ever changed.

Fifty years is not a long time. It is one adult lifetime.

Long enough to remember what was.

And long enough to notice what is no longer the same.
