| Every recognised species on Earth has one thing in common. Before it received a scientific name, before specimens were preserved in museum collections, before researchers published papers describing its anatomy or behaviour, it was unknown. At some point in history, every animal that is now accepted by science existed only as an observation, a story, a rumour or an encounter that someone else had yet to verify. Discovery has always begun with uncertainty. It is no surprise, then, that few subjects divide opinion quite like cryptozoology. Mention the word in conversation and images of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster or the Yeti quickly spring to mind. For some, it is little more than the pursuit of mythical beasts. For others, it represents the possibility that our planet may still harbour animals that have escaped scientific recognition. Between those two positions lies a fascinating and often misunderstood field of investigation that has spent decades balancing curiosity against evidence. The word cryptozoology comes from the Greek words kryptos, meaning hidden, zoon, meaning animal, and logos, meaning study. It was popularised during the 1950s by the Belgian-French zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans, whose work examined reports of animals that had yet to be formally recognised by science. He did not invent mysterious creatures, nor did he ask people to accept every extraordinary story they heard. Instead, he argued that eyewitness reports, historical records and local knowledge deserved careful investigation before being dismissed outright. Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not, his greatest contribution was to encourage a more structured approach to examining zoological mysteries. That distinction is important because cryptozoology is often portrayed unfairly as little more than monster hunting. In reality, the subject occupies an unusual position. It is neither fully accepted as a scientific discipline nor simply a collection of fairy tales. It exists in the space where anecdotal evidence meets scientific scrutiny. Most investigations end with perfectly ordinary explanations. A surprising footprint turns out to belong to a known animal. An unfamiliar call is identified as a bird heard under unusual conditions. A distant silhouette becomes a trick of light, perspective or expectation. Good investigators are rarely disappointed by these outcomes because eliminating the ordinary is an essential part of discovering the extraordinary. History offers several reminders that nature occasionally rewards open-minded investigation. The giant squid spent centuries dismissed as nothing more than exaggerated sailors’ tales before living animals were finally documented. The okapi was well known to local communities in the forests of Central Africa long before Western zoologists accepted its existence. Many outside Africa once regarded the mountain gorilla as little more than rumour. Perhaps the most famous example is the coelacanth, a fish believed to have disappeared around sixty-six million years ago until a living specimen was identified off the coast of South Africa in 1938. None of these animals was a cryptid forever. They crossed the line from the unknown into the known. It is tempting to use these examples as evidence that every legendary creature must also exist, but that would be a misunderstanding of both science and history. Rediscovered species demonstrate that discovery is still possible; they do not prove that every mystery has a hidden biological explanation. Science advances by testing ideas against evidence, not by assuming either belief or disbelief. That process can sometimes appear frustratingly slow, but it is also what prevents extraordinary claims from becoming accepted without proper scrutiny. Healthy scepticism is not the enemy of discovery. In many respects, it is one of its greatest safeguards. My own interest in this subject began long before I knew the word cryptozoology. As a young child living in Malaysia during the late 1960s, my amahs occasionally spoke of the Orang Mawas, using stories of the mysterious forest creature to encourage good behaviour or a little extra caution. Whether those tales were intended to frighten or entertain, they achieved something far more lasting. They sparked curiosity. Around the same time, visits to Singapore’s Tiger Balm Gardens exposed me to a remarkable world of folklore, mythical creatures and cultural storytelling. Looking back now, I realise those experiences planted a seed that would continue to grow for decades. As I grew older, that childhood curiosity expanded beyond Southeast Asia. By my early teenage years, I was reading about Bigfoot, the Yeti, Nessie and countless other unexplained creatures reported around the world. Some stories seemed implausible even then, while others raised questions that refused to disappear. Years later, working professionally with exotic mammals and unusual species reinforced another important lesson. The natural world is already filled with animals that many people would struggle to believe existed if they had never seen them. Encountering a liger for the first time is an experience in itself. Photographs rarely prepare you for the sheer scale of the animal standing in front of you. Experiences like that teach humility. They remind us that nature has always been capable of exceeding our expectations. None of this means that every reported cryptid exists; far from it. It does, however, encourage a more thoughtful approach. Eyewitness testimony has value, but memories can be mistaken. Physical evidence is important, but it must withstand careful examination. Ecology matters because animals require habitats, food, and breeding populations to survive. History provides context. Modern technology, including camera traps, satellite imagery and environmental DNA, offers powerful new tools for investigation. No single piece of evidence should stand alone. The strongest conclusions emerge when different forms of evidence begin to support one another. This may be where modern discussions about cryptozoology sometimes lose their way. On one side are those prepared to accept almost every story without question. On the other are those who dismiss every report before the investigation has even begun. Both positions arrive at conclusions too early. An investigator should begin with neither belief nor disbelief. The starting point should always be a question. Could large unknown animals be living undiscovered today? The answer depends entirely on where, how and what is being proposed. Some claims conflict with everything currently understood about biology and ecology. Others remain at least biologically plausible, even if convincing evidence has yet to emerge. Distinguishing between those possibilities is far more interesting than simply declaring everything true or everything false. Perhaps that is why cryptozoology continues to endure. It is not really about monsters. It is about the boundaries of knowledge. It reminds us that science is not a finished book sitting complete upon a shelf, but an ongoing process of observation, testing and discovery. Every generation inherits unanswered questions from the one before it, and every generation adds discoveries that previous generations considered impossible.
